How has Golden Apple developed your teaching abilities over the course of the scholar program? What has been the most influential portion of the program?
Golden Apple has given me the tools and experiences I need to succeed in the classroom. They've selected the best and finest teachers in Illinois to enlighten us in ways that will benefit my future students. As a result of these experiences, I've been able to practice the many things that I've been taught through the different on-sites in which I've been placed. The biggest take home message that I've collected from Golden Apple is the importance of providing my students the opportunity to construct their own knowledge through inquiry based learning,by taking ownership of their own learning. Golden Apple's preparation efforts will be intuitive to my career as a teacher. Through the lessons that I've learned with Golden Apple, I am confident in my own abilities to enter the classroom. I'm thankful for the experiences that Golden Apple has provided me and will continue to provide me as I continue my career as a teacher.
Golden apple has helped to teach me how to really take a step back and go to the basics. It has taught me how to handle students whose backgrounds are not the best and bring that baggage daily to the classroom. Golden Apple has given me various tools to help aide me in assisting students to be able to handle and possibly fix their issues. It has also given me many teaching experiences doing whole group instruction, team teaching (co-teaching) and small group teaching. Many examples were very positive however some did give me an example of what not to do. Even though these examples may have been negative I was able to reflect and determine what I would do differently. Finally, I learned the importance of reflection. Learning to reflect on everything to determine the effectiveness, the benefits, the consequences, what worked, and what didn’t work has helped me to become a better teacher.
I feel Golden Apple has developed my teaching abilities over the course of the program in the way that I feel more comfortable about being evaluated by a principal or administrator when I become a teacher because I am more familiar with the rubrics used and what principals look for during evaluations. Also, golden apple has developed my teaching abilities over the course of the program because I'm more familiar with the different techniques that sometimes my educations courses at school only go over briefly, such as response to intervention, PBIS, and inquiry. The most influential part of this program has been all of the professional development courses that I have been able to take over the years in this program, but the most influential courses would be the inquiry course and the crisis management course.
Golden Apple has increased my comfort level in the classroom and provided me with tons of information about different aspects of teaching. I have learned about PBIS, RtI, and millions of other programs in school districts. After this summer I have an idea of how to deescalate an intense situation and the classroom expectation I want. I have also learned multiple ideas for different types of homework assignments. The most influential part of my Golden Apple experience happened during my third summer at SIU-Edwardsville. My on site placement during the summer was extremely helpful. It gave me lots of hands on experience and I was able to try different things out with the support of my cooperating teaching.
Golden Apple represents an essential key when it comes to my learning experience inside the education field. It has been four years since Golden Apple has aided and developed my understanding of what it means to be a real teacher. Every summer, I take new and innovative ideas to practice and evolve my education. I believe that Golden Apple wants the best candidates and prepared them for the teaching career. I have attended dozens of seminars, workshops and conferences where I gain valuable pieces of information that will improve my teaching skills. Also, the on-site experiences provided us with fresh and exact information about how the students view education in today's world. In addition, the network combine with all my classmates increases my chances of knowing and finding the best educators that will work with me. Golden Apple has made my dream of being the best teacher a living truth.
Golden Apple has given me more confidence. I feel much more comfortable in front of a classroom. It is comforting to know that I always have a support system when it comes to teaching. I have many mentor teachers at my disposal when I run into difficulties in the classroom. I know that the only thing I have to do is call the Golden Apple office. I have seen myself grow so much as a teacher and a person in the past four years. As a person, I am much more open-minded. Coming from a small town, Golden Apple has been solely responsible for opening my eyes to a world outside of what I was used to. The people I met through Golden Apple have had the greatest influence on me--whether it be students, cooperating teachers, mentors, or my peers. I have met some of the greatest people I know through this program. I know that I will always have someone there for me--professionally or personally.
Being a Pathway, I have only had half the opportunities the majority of scholars receive in teacher preparation through the Scholars program. Despite this, I know I have gained much through the program, though the majority of that learning has come from the Elmhurst SI more than my DePaul SI. For one, the professional development seminars provided at Elmhurst have been useful in making me think of teaching from different perspectives. As well, I have also been reinforced in my philosophy towards classroom management, instruction, and education overall. Of these, Dr. Brown's ongoing seminar on EdTPA has been the most useful for me as preservice teacher. Through her class, I have expanded upon my understanding of the EdTPA process and requirements while also provided resources to challenge the over-reliance of rote memorization in the History-Social Sciences. In all, I am grateful to having been able to be a scholar and look forward to further growing as a teacher.
Golden Apple has done so much for me over the 4 years. They have given me so much opportunity to explore different teaching techniques as well as given me a bank of them to always refer to. I have been able to develop in my teaching career far before even entering it professionally in a way that others can not. Through all of the professional development and in classroom experiences I have been a part of, only through summer institutes, I have received the chance to become a person that will be confident walking into my first classroom.
Golden Apple has helped me in various ways over the last four years, with the most important being that I am more comfortable standing at the front of a classroom. My first summer, I was thrown into a classroom and had the opportunity to teach the class the entire time I was there. Although it was scary at first, I quickly grew comfortable and at ease, both of which have strengthened even more over the years. Along with this, I have gained skills in areas such as classroom management and inquiry-based learning. Being a part of Golden Apple has given me great opportunities and allowed me to grow in ways other than the traditional college student.
My Golden Apple summer institute programs have been key in the development as a teacher. Being surrounded by Golden Apple fellows, distinguished professionals, and other scholars provided me opportunities to compare great ideas and learn new ones. I wrote and published my first leasson plans during my third Golden Apple summer institute, which prepared me succeed in my higher level education courses at my university. This program gives me the opportunity to grow as a professional through in class experiences and teacher development workshops.
In addition to providing me with an abundance of experience, roughly 3 times as much as any other pre-service teacher from my college, it has also provided me with the experience of meeting people who I may not have been inclined to meet otherwise. Meeting with a group of people who share one common goal: helping children from across Illinois has really been a positive experience. In the future, I can only hope that my classroom will be as diverse and full of people similar to those I have been exposed to through Golden Apple. In an essence, Golden Apple has empowered me to create a new lens to view life, and understand that what may be typical for myself, is not necessarily typical for others. Where this is not a “concrete skill”, I will be able to use this framework of thinking to positively impact my students, regardless of who they are, in the near future. This is why I believe that the other Golden Apple Scholars themselves’ were the part of the program that influenced me most and made me a better teacher. I could not be happier with the quality of people I have been able to meet, interact, and grow with over the past 4 years. Which is why I believe that Golden Apple is the strongest network of professional teachers there is.
